AN ANCIENT physical meditation is about to hit the New Forest for the first time. In the footsteps of martial arts karate and Tai Chi comes Shizenryu, an “empty-hand” exercise developed by Buddhist and Taoist monks to improve health and well-being through the body and mind. According
to teacher Sally Woods…Shizenryu, which is an advanced practise known as
'Pushing Hands'
can alter the brain patterns
and increase the capacity for learning if executed correctly. It’s
also claimed to combat stress, which is why Sally says it’s an essential
tool for coping with the strains of modern-day life. “It’s
brilliant. I wouldn’t want to do anything else because this holds every
answer for my life. I have found it to be true,” she said. “I’ve learnt how to use the breathing techniques to cope with natural changes in my life." “What
we’re trying to get across to people is that learning to relax while
also doing something physical can be of real benefit in today’s
society.” Sally, 24, of Pokesdown, has attended the main Shizenryu base
in Queen’s Park for several years. Now with her partner Andy Wren, 24,
she has decided to branch out into new territory with a class at the
community hall of Poulner Junior School in Ringwood. Contact Sally Woods
